Curated Cuisine: Redefining Chinese American recipes with Jon Kung

You might have first discovered the delicious dishes by Jon Kung from his wildly popular TikTok, which demonstrates a deeply personal approach to cooking. Darryl C. Murphy, host of The Common, moderated a conversation with Kung exploring his new cookbook “Kung Food: Chinese-American Recipes.”

Kung’s “third-culture” food journey has origins in being born in Los Angeles and raised in Hong Kong and Toronto, but stems from a fateful decision turning away from law school toward a passion for cooking creative cuisine that blurs lines and enriches taste buds.

Curated Cuisine: A taste of Talulla with James Beard Award-nominated chef Conor Dennehy

Darryl C. Murphy, host of The Common, moderated a conversation with Conor Dennehy, chef and co-owner of Talulla and the only Massachusetts finalist for Best Chef: Northeast at this year’s James Beard Awards. Named after Dennehy’s daughter, Talulla is a small Cambridge restaurant with 12 tables that is a reflection of family memories. With his wife, sommelier Danielle Ayer, his mission is to share “stories about the farmers and winemakers we’ve met on our travels, and how their food and drink have inspired our own creations.”

Slow AF Run Club: Martinus Evans on empowering anyone who wants to run

Martinus Evans does not mind being last in a race. Instead, he wants to celebrate and enjoy the community with other back-of-the-pack runners. Evans is a fitness influencer and author of the blog “300 Pounds and Running,” who wants to make running more inclusive and create space — especially for Black recreational runners. He is the author of “Slow AF Run Club: The Ultimate Guide for Anyone Who Wants to Run,” a book of the same name as an online club he founded with more than 10,000 members around the world dedicated to supporting and encouraging people who have felt left out of the sport, to get out and run.

Darryl C. Murphy, host of WBUR’s daily news and culture podcast The Common, moderated a conversation with Evans about his inspiring story from the doctor’s office in 2012 when he was called “fat” to his New York City Marathon where at mile 16 a spectator shouted that he was “slow AF!” — which became the inspiration for the Slow AF Run Club.

Curated Cuisine: Ice cream social with FoMu, Gracie's and Toscanini’s

Curated Cuisine is a monthly series examining all things edible, from the chefs cooking the food to the writers reviewing the recipes. Meet the people shaping the food industry, both local and national and enjoy a post-show bite inspired by the conversation.

One of the best ways to beat the heat and indulge your sweet tooth is to stop by your local ice cream shop. For most people in Greater Boston, that’s usually just a short walk away. Why? Bostonians love ice cream. And who can blame us? Ice cream could even be good for you.

Darryl C. Murphy, host of The Common, sat down for an evening about all things ice cream with local ice cream legends and entrepreneurs.

Featured panelists and ice cream:
Deena Jalal — FoMu founder and owner
Aaron Cohen — Gracie's dad and Gracie's Ice Cream owner
Gus Rancatore — Toscanini’s co-founder and owner

Instead We Became Evil: Danish rapper Sleiman and Dart Adams

Danish rapper Sleiman’s story is one of survival and art like many in the global hip hop community. But for journalist and author Dart Adams, who documents Sleiman’s journey in a new book, “Instead We Became Evil: A True Story of Survival and Perseverance,” it’s a story echoing that of the people Adams grew up with in Boston — an immigrant tale of culture clash and a balancing act with identity.

Darryl C. Murphy, host of WBUR's daily news and culture podcast The Common, interviews Adams and Sleiman.

Dilla Time: Journalist and hip-hop historian Dan Charnas on the life and legacy of a music legend

Music legend and hip-hop producer J Dilla is often referred to as a musical genius. The Detroit native transformed the sound of hip-hop and popular music with beats that introduced a new rhythmic feel and elevated the art of sampling. The life and legacy of J Dilla is chronicled in a new book titled, “Dilla Time: The Life and Afterlife of J Dilla, the Hip-Hop Producer Who Reinvented Rhythm,” by author and journalist Dan Charnas.

WBUR reporter Darryl C. Murphy joins Charnas for a conversation on this new book that has been described as a biography and a study in musicology and cultural history of an iconic producer whose legacy has touched renowned artists from D’Angelo and Erykah Badu to Janet Jackson and Kendrick Lamar.
